Art to Engage With…..

I’m Valerie Galpin

For several years I have been working exclusively with oil paints. More recently, I have returned to exploring the advantages of acrylic.

My art subjects are constantly evolving. Initially, much of my art focused on the coastline and harbours near my home on the Isle of Man.  More recently, although less recognizable as Manx scenes, my paintings are still drawing on the atmosphere of local places and people.

Whatever the subject, I find that I prefer to paint in series. Just  one painting doesn’t say enough. Painting in series enables me to consider my subject from various positions. The subjects are usually derived from some aspect of real life.

My inspiration varies, it could be the balance of shapes within the composition. Another time, it might be the contrast or harmony of colours in the landscape which attracts me. Occasionally the trigger for me is the emotion which emanates from the object.

The act of painting is my way of losing my grip on reality. It is my therapy of choice.  Painting makes me happy. My subjects may be derived from life, but the act of creating them lifts me out of normality and transports me to a place of freedom and calmness.

I want my paintings to make people happy or reflective. I am attempting to share a narrative with them. It is not necessary for us to perceive the same story, as I hope my viewers will find their own interpretations and enjoy them.

It is my hope that my paintings provide my viewers with a retreat from the harsh realities of life and an opportunity to find their own personal space in which to transcend their everyday lives.
